    John 20:21 Note

    Ellicot
Jews outside celebrate J death and readt to kill them. They are receiving the peace which J had and held him through such challenges.
==🟡“The general result … seems to be, that in this charge the Lord presents His own Mission as the one abiding Mission of the Father; this He fulfils through His Church. His disciples receive no new commission, but carry out His.” Westcott==
Jesus was sent as a witness to the father – they are sent as witness to the son (resurrection)

    Pulpit
As the Father hath sent me (ἀπέσταλκε, hath sent me on a special commission), I also send you (πέμπω, charge you to go forth and accomplish this commission of mine); see Westcott’s excursus on the New Testament usage of the two verb
Isaiah 61:1, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord hath anointed Me to preach good tidings—He hath sent Me,” etc.

    Josh Observations:

Mary Magdeline is first. Peter and John (unnamed) RUN together to see the clothes.
    John is writing as eyewitness.
vs 8. John sees and believes – first time understands and therefore able to believe Jesus prediction.
10 – did not know what was next so went home
11 – does not understand or believe, so is weeping. She neither understands nor believes until 16.
14 – MM is the first true witness to the physical resurrected Jesus (P&J only saw the empty tomb which MM saw first)
15 – Jesus doesn’t say directly who he is, but gives context to allow realisation. This follows his practice with the other. After a season of ministry and seeing all his works he asks, "Who do you say I am?"
17 – "do not cling" like a bride preparing for the day, he is not to be ruffled. Holy.
"My father and Your father. My God and your God" – not denying his divinity which he has well established. Emphasising his brotherhood with her and the relationship to the father which he has brought them into.
19 – Sunday evening the disciples are locked away. They are afraid. Jesus the head is killed, a greater purge is expected. Jesus presence is miraculous. He goes beyond there barriers to break down fear.
20 – fear turns to joy in his physical presence –> this will continue and grow under the presence of the SPirit
21 – as the father sent me:

    • declaration of sonship
    • remaining presence of the Holy Spirit
    • to go and proclaim repentance and forgiveness of sins in Jesus
29 – Some saw the tomb and believed. Some saw Jesus physical and believed. Blessed rae those who don’t see yet believe.

"Peace be with you" repeated 3x

CF: 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (14:27) here, peace is the opposite of fear and trouble. Why? They have lasting/abiding peace with God, which is all that counts.

==🟡How is peace with God the antidote for fear of the world?==
Because it connects to eternal life, absolute security. Because in John, it connects to the indwelling presence of God by His Spirit. Lord, thank you! How generous and sufficient and wonderful you are to give us your peace=presence, life, security.
…202:21 … 22 when he had said this he breathed on them "receive the Holy Spirit" – with peace comes God’s presence, by which we go out into the world to speak give peace.

Luke 10:5-6 – those who receive the message the disciples were to let there peace remain there.
Disiciples are to speak peace (forgiveness) to the world.
Therefore, in the bigger picture peace is the ministry of reconciliation.

"Do not rejoice that the demons tremble. Rejoice that your names are written in the book of life."

Why 20:21 applies to all believers.

    1. Like Mary, we are all called children of God and brothers and sisters with Christ
    2. Like the disciples, the gift of the Holy Spirit would be for all people (Acts 2)
    3. Like the disciples, we have received God’s peace in the gospel, and with it, the responsibility to give it to others
    4. The peace would need to be proclaimed to generations after the apostles
    5. We don’t believe in absolution by priests, NT teached clearly priesthood of all believers ie. we are representatives of God to a world far from him.
Our "sent-ness" does not relate to our "going" anywhere, but to us being the living presence of Jesus and stewards of the Gospel everywhere he has placed us.
Our lives are part of the grand story of His salvation being proclaimed to the end of the earth.

    Tasker Notes

Jesus injunction not to cling – is not to cling to keep him here, because he needs to go to the Father. Josh: inferred that J disappears leaving her alone? perhaps not.
Tasker: yes – Jesus to be thought of having ascended to the Father post death/post Mary
Jesus return to the Father is not as he came – Jesus returns to the Father with an earthly nature, still bearing wounds.
John 16:20 – disciples brief sorrow is turned to joy.
John 17:18 "As you sent me into the world, so I send them into the world." repeated after resurrection.
Sanctifying power of risen life conveyed by the Spirit.
The gospel preaching results in both saving and hardening of people.
Belief – some need touch, others sight, others just hearing is enough. Thomas = loyal, courageous, pessimistic

Jesus can only give peace after his passion. This qualifies them fully for apostleship and ministry of reconciliation.
